The Korean civilization is more than 4,310 years old and has its own traditional language, culture and martial arts. The ancient martial arts had their beginning hundreds of years before the birth of Christ and included the use of military weapons; however, the advantages of unarmed-combat-techniques were not overlooked and the skills and many forms of unarmed combat were also emphasized and developed.
The main feature of Tae Kwon Do is that it is a free fighting combat sport using bare hands and feet to repel an oponent. All of it's activities are based on a defense spirit, since Tae Kwon Do was developed as a defense against enemy attacks. The most important fact about Tae Kown Do as a martial art sport is that it is not only a superior art of self defense, but adds remarkable self confidence to it's practitioners.
Self confidence makes people generous in their attitudes towards weaker people. They can stand equally against any opponent, but their code forbids unfair assults or unnecessary use of it's force. The practice of Tae Kwon Do gives an individual the mental attitude of modesty. The virtues of modesty and generosity are fundamentally based on self confidence. It is obvious that healthy bodies make man active and powerful. Such mental and physical self confidence are beneficial to the mental life of individuals as well as their families, neighbours and their Nation.
